"I did a lot of watercolour painting as a child, as I was often at home due to sickness. I remember being inspired by some Albert Namatjira prints on the classroom walls at the primary school I attended in Perth. I think those works and the scenes they depicted took me to places I’d rather have been than at school.
In my teens I got more interested in other things: sport, music, surfing and skin diving. I never lost my interest in art though, and have always loved going to exhibitions and galleries. I particularly like French Impressionism and have been fortunate to view many famous works.
Eleven or so years ago my wife started attending an Albany TAFE painting course run by Indra Geidens, and while interested in going myself, I initially felt too nervous. Eventually I succumbed and did one term. Painting, along with my continued involvement with music and film-making now fills a significant part of my retired life.
A proportion of my working life was spent around photography – both still and video. I think this was a useful background for painting, particularly appreciation of composition and tone. I guess my main source of inspiration is the natural world, particularly the south coast. I hope you enjoy my work."
