Nell is a self taught visual artist and photographer and has called
Denmark, Western Australia home for the past 20 years. She bought a secondhand SLR as a young adult, and after delving into creative practices ranging from printmaking and textiles to painting and ceramics, found her way back to photography when picking up a preloved Digital SLR. With the exploration of colour, form, and light, Nell finds her inspiration everywhere, in particular her love & passion for her own garden, along with her growing collection of unique and colourful vintage/antique glassware and vessels.
Flora is a reoccurring theme for Nell with a limitless supply with every season. Nell creates a bouquet of flora, then rearranges them focusing on their extraordinary beauty, shape, contrast and composition. Rearranging and enhancing these elements allows her to satisfy the search for beauty and order. She then composes layers in the camera to achieve the final image, with minor adjustments post production.
Her workflow is instinctive and imaginative, where each decision is determined by the last. It is an immersive process where the possibilities are seemingly endless. The process Nell uses brings her such joy, optimism and hope for the future. It is her aspiration that these feelings are heightened and transferred to the viewer. Through this exploration of layering of images, Nell hopes it can provide insights into themes related to her life experiences. Her artistic approach can be challenging and unpredictable with exciting results. Nell will pursue her exploration of flora, colour and light, and will continue to challenge herself in seeking to understand what it is to be a fine art photographer in the 21st century.
